Aves draws on the rich heritage of Otomi fabrics from Mexico. The Forest Hill Collection A collection of hand printed wallpapers, linens and velvets created in collaboration by South East London based design practices 2LG Studio and Custhom.
Designed as a series of floral textures creating layers for interiors - they were inspired by classic florals, re-imagining them for contemporary interiors and architectural spaces.
The collaboration seeded itself two years ago when 2LG began renovating their Forest Hill home and discovered a fragment of old floral wallpaper beneath several layers of paint and paper. They shared this moment with Custhom and it began to grow into a full collection as the tiny floral stayed in all of their minds.

Aves draws on the rich heritage of Otomi fabrics from Mexico. The tactile designs depict a menagerie of creatures, delicately stitched on paper and cotton in a palette of soft grey and dark charcoal, creating designs that are at once dramatic and refined. While the fabric is immediately reminiscent of the original Otomi designs, the unexpected application of the same embroidered motif on wallpaper offers a striking alternative outcome. The pattern is rooted in tradition but offers a contemporary and graphic interpretation. Echoing the craftsmanship of the original hand embroidery, CUSTHOM have maintained the use of stitch and have sourced the finest modern British craftsmen in the North of England to embroider their design. Using digital embroidery, the traditional Otomi creatures are expressed with graphic precision, geometric shapes underpinning the organic imagery.

This elegant side plate expresses the defining frame motif within the Palladian series. The geometric shapes of the window frame, in turn, being used to frame the plate and finished with a hand painted Off-black rim.

This oversized ‘curve’ zig-zag covers the width of the entire roll. In a rich navy blue and French grey, the bold angular line is highlighted using the signature Custhom metallic accent, with a delicate gold contour edging the divide between colours. The paper is hand silkscreen printed and has an grain print finish. The design can be aligned and hung in a uniform direction to create a solid wall of the curve zig-zag pattern, or with alternate ‘drops’ inverted, creating dramatic and graphic navy diamonds.
